The Rolex Sports Car series Roar before the Rolex 24 January Testing Days took place all weekend at Daytona International Speedway, amid uncooperative weather.
SPEED Television has indicated that there is a rumor that NEXTEL Cup star Jimmie Johnson and Nationwide driver and Road Racing specialist Marcos Ambrose may be looking at teaming up to drive a #98 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Daytona Prototype at the next Grand-Am Rolex series race, at Watkins Glen International Raceway.
While Jimmie Johnson is no stranger to the road racing camp, having made multiple entries in Bob Stallings' Daytona Prototypes in the past, Marcos Ambrose would be a true Rookie to the series. Although Ambrose was very successful in his previous racing career in the Australian Supercar GT series, he has not stepped foot in a high speed, high downforce Daytona Prototype in competition.
If this rumor is true, and there is no reason it wouldn't be, the competition at Watkins Glen has just went up a notch. Just another proof-positive that Grand-Am is where the racing is at.
After a devastating day Saturday, the No. 99 GAINSCO Bob Stallings Pontiac Riley took the overall win at Barber Motorsports Park in the Porsche 250, with Scott Pruett and Michael Valiente in hot pursuit.
A late restart (in which recardo Zonta jumped) with 20 minutes remaining in the event set up the nail-biter of a finish, while the No. 61 Lap-down car kept Valiente held back, allowing Pruett to chase down Gurney. Valiente was able to quickly get around the No. 61, and created a 3 dog fight that, at one point, had all 3 drivers within eight tengths of a second of eachother. All 3 drivers made valiant efforts in trying ti displace eachothers' racing lines about the raceway, however, as the group approached a GT car entering a corner, Gurney was successful in quickly negotiating his way around the GT car, while Pruett and Valiente were not. As this allowed Gurney to escape and build up a spacious lead, it left Pruett with a bright blue set of mirrors as he defended his position against a very aggressive Valiente.
Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney are now tied in the Championship Points Standings with Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett, though Fogarty and Gurney now have the upper hand with 3 win's over Rojas/Pruett's 2 wins.
