After a month of grueling preparation, Scott Dixon dominated the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, capturing the win from the pole and taking is Chip Ganassi Target Car to victory lane. From the beginning of the race, he and teammate Dan Wheldon were running conservatively, first and second. Dixon had the right pit strategy and luck in the end as he was able to hold off a late race run by Vitor Meira and Marco Andretti. This win would mark Dixon's twelfth career win. Unfortunately for teammate Dan Wheldon, he would not be so lucky, finishing 19th, after running up front most of the day.
The race began fairly conservatively, with only Thomas Scheckter racing his way to the front, after starting eleventh. On lap 8 the caution came out when Bruno Junqueira's right side mirror broke off his car and stayed on the track. During that caution Sarah Fisher ran into problems when she spun her car as she was trying to warm up her tires going into turn four. A few laps later, rookie Graham Rahal got into the wall going into turn four. Rahal's crash took him out of the race.Fisher and Rahal were not the only drivers who suffered disappointment throughout the day.AJ Foyt IV had his car catch fire during a pit stop. Foyt would be able to continue the race, but lost track position as his team searched for a second helmet. Foyt was unable to look out of his first helmet which was doused with foam to put the fire out. On lap 61, Marty Roth got into the wall in turn four, which also ended his day. On lap 61, Marty Roth got into the wall ending his day, while Jaime Camara's day ended on lap 80 after getting into the wall.
On lap 93, Tony Kanan took the lead, but would only suffer disappointment a few laps later when he got forced into the marbles by teammate Marco Andretti, causing him to spin and collect Sarah Fisher. Fisher, who was running her own car, had no where to go. She was clearly disappointed after the incident, especially because she had invested so much to run the Indy 500.
There was a scary moment for crews on pit road when Alex Lloyd got hard into the outside wall in turn four, then went spinning into pit road. Lloyd took out the scoring monitor on the entrance to pit road, sending debris across and down pit road. No one was injured in the incident.
Danica Patrick had one of the worst days of her career on Sunday. Patrick was fighting the steering on her car all day, and then was struggling to gain track position when her car did not have the horse power to make any passes. On the second to last pit stop, Patrick was pushed into the wall by Ryan Briscoe and then spun on pit road. Her suspension broke, ending her day.
After the incident, Patrick got out of her car and attempted to make her way to Briscoe's pit, but was stopped by security and IRL officials. After the incident, Patrick indicated that they had a good car and apologized to her team for the incident. When asked what happened, she said that it was obvious what happened and that it was good that she didn't make it to Briscoe's pit.
