After a strong showing at a recent test session at Kentucky, ARCA rookie sensation Alli Owens appears to be on the brink of a major breakout. Fans have noticed her for a while, she is the third most viewed driver on ARCA Nation. But now, it appears the racing mainstream is turning their attention towards her as well.
Last month, we documented her struggles, her career and how her racing career almost came to an end in a one-on-one interview with the ARCA rookie. Tonight, Alli Owens will be on ARCA Thunder at 8:00pm EST. The Kentucky ARCA Re/Max 150 can be seen live on SPEED Friday night at 8pm EST.
Alli Owens has shown tremendous maturity on and off the track at only 19 years of age. At Daytona, she made the smart move of turning the car left in a spinout instead of trying to correct it and possibly wrecking the field in doing so. At Pocono, she managed to drive the car up to around the top-15 without power steering. She was on her way to a remarkable, considering the circumstances, top-ten finish when another car spun and crashed right in front of her.
What's most remarkable about Owens is how she managed to overcome a terrible motorcycle accident in Daytona Beach. Not only did she get back on her feet much sooner than anyone anticipated, she was back in the racecar just four weeks later testing and racing at Iowa.
Now, a chance of a lifetime looms. She was one of the fastest drivers at Kentucky, the question is if she can catch a break and cruise to a solid finish, or possibly a win, at Kentucky.
Alli Owens will also be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the Lexington Legends on Wednesday night from Applebee's Stadium in in nearby Lexington ahead of Friday's televised ARCA race.
The ceremonial first pitch is a longstanding tradition in baseball,” Owens said in a release by Sports Media and Events. “Every year since 1910, the president has thrown out a first pitch. It’s a tradition I’m honored to carry on. It’s going to be a fun night. What makes it extra special is that it’s also Ladies Night. I hope that a lot of ladies come out so we can show the boys how it’s done,” joked Owens.
Owens must qualify in the race on-time in order to start the big show. Complete coverage of time trials and racing action is avaliable on ARCA's official website.
